A FLAGPOLE has been installed on the tower of the Church of the Holy Cross in Crediton.

The idea was put forward by the rector as an appropriate way to mark the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the first cathedral in Devon at Crediton.

It took several months for sufficient funds and permission for the flagpole to be obtained.

The Rev Nigel Guthrie wanted to thank those who contributed financially to the project: the governors of Holy Cross, the Friends of Crediton Church, Devon County Council Fund and a number of generous individuals.

The 10m fibreglass flagpole was installed by Western Steeplejacks from Exeter, in time for the St George flag to be hoisted for the visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Friday, June 26.

The flag will fly on a number of dates throughout the year such as the Queen's birthday, St George's Day, Christmas Day, Remembrance Sunday and the flower and Christmas tree festivals at the church.
